Sanofi/J&J Scrap E. Coli Vaccine Candidate

Sanofi and Johnson & Johnson have discontinued the development of their vaccine candidate for extraintestinal pathogenic E. coli because Phase 3 data show that it was not sufficiently effective at preventing invasive E. coli disease (IED) compared to placebo. The decision was based on a review by an independent data monitoring committee. No safety signals related to the vaccine were identified and, “throughout the study, investigators ensured that participants who developed IED received prompt treatment and care,” they say. The E.mbrace study was initiated 6/2021 and enrolled adults aged 60 years or older in stable health with a history of urinary tract infection in the past two years.
