Sen. Blumenthal Bill on Device Cybersecurity

Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) has introduced a bill (S 1656) to amend the federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act to provide cybersecurity protections for medical devices. The measure would create a cyber “report card” for medical devices and require manufacturers to obtain consent from healthcare providers before remotely accessing a device. It would not require device manufacturers to seek a new 510(k) clearance from FDA for cybersecurity-related software updates. Blumenthal said he is worried that while some manufacturers offer prompt cybersecurity updates, others fail to follow cybersecurity best practices.
