Senate Appropriators Approve $49 Million Boost in FDA 2017 Budget

A Senate Appropriations subcommittee has approved a 2017 funding bill that would provide FDA $2.8 billion in discretionary spending, a $39 million (1%) increase over fiscal year 2016 spending levels. Including revenue from user fees, total 2017 funding is $4.78 billion, which is $103 million above FY2016. Within this total, a $40.2 million increase is provided for food safety activities, $15 million above the president’s request, and an $11.9 million increase is included for medical product safety activities. The measure is in line with a House spending bill that passed a subcommittee vote last month.
