# Senate Confirms Hahn as Next FDA Commissioner

The Senate 12/12 confirmed **Stephen Hahn** as the next FDA commissioner on a floor vote of 72-18\. President Trump [nominated](https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/president-donald-j-trump-announces-intent-nominate-appoint-individuals-key-administration-posts-21/?ref=fdaweb.com) the MD Anderson chief medical officer 11/1, the same day former acting commissioner **Ned Sharpless** was ordered back to his previous position as National Cancer Institute director.

Hahn moved from the National Cancer Institute to the University of Pennsylvania in 1996 and was chair of radiation oncology from 2005 to 2014\. He then moved to MD Anderson in Houston as division head of radiation oncology and in 2017 was named the center’s chief operating officer at a time of mounting financial losses and staff cuts.

Friends of Cancer Research commended the Senate for confirming Hahn without delay. “The U.S. is at an inflection point for science and innovation,” the group said. “Dr. Hahn has a strong focus on advancing and improving the public health. His experience has prepared him to bolster the FDA’s important work that directly impacts patients’ lives.”
