Senate FDA Appropriations Bill Includes $20 Million Increase

The Senate Appropriations Committee 6/22 voted 28 to 0 to approve FDA’s appropriations bill, which provides the agency a $20 million increase. “More specifically, it provides an additional $7 million to conduct oversight of cosmetics for the first time ever, $3.75 million to strengthen FDA’s food safety programs, $3.75 million to address device shortages and supply chain issues, $3 million to advance neuroscience research, and $2.5 million for ALS research,” according to a Senate summary. Excluding user fees, the measure includes $3.55 billion for FDA, which is $20 million over the $3.53 billion provided by a House counterpart earlier this month.

The Alliance for a Stronger FDA said that because this is only the second of 12 Senate appropriations bills, the FDA bill may wait for other funding bills before being considered by the full Senate. Also, the House and Senate are both in recess beginning 6/26 and returning the week of 7/10.
