Senate OKs Bill Ending Animal Testing Mandates

The Senate unanimously passed 9/29 the bipartisan FDA Modernization Act 2.0 (S. 5002), introduced by Sens. Rand Paul (R-KY) and Cory Booker (D-NJ). A statement (contains a link to the bill) issued by Paul says the legislation “ends an outdated FDA mandate that experimental drugs must be tested on animals before they are used on humans in clinical trials. The bill doesn’t ban animal testing outright but would allow the option for drug sponsors to use alternative methods where they are suitable.”

A statement from Animal Wellness Action says the bill also includes language from an additional proposed reform, the Reducing Animal Testing Act, to amend the Public Health Service Act to remove the animal testing requirements for biosimilars.
