Senator **Jeanne Shaheen** (D-NH) led eight senators in a [2/1 letter](https://www.hirono.senate.gov/download/miscarriage-management-mifepristone-letter?ref=fdaweb.com) to Danco Laboratories, a manufacturer of mifepristone, urging it to submit a supplemental NDA to add miscarriage management to the medication’s label. “Currently, mifepristone’s label includes medication abortion, but it can also be safely and legally used for miscarriage management, Shaheen said in a [statement](https://www.shaheen.senate.gov/news/press/shaheen-senators-send-letter-urging-drug-manufacturer-to-update-medication-label-to-protect-women-experiencing-early-pregnancy-miscarriage?ref=fdaweb.com).

“As many states are trying to limit the use of medication abortion,” Shaheen continued, “women experiencing early-pregnancy miscarriage are facing barriers to accessing this critical drug because the phrase ‘miscarriage management’ is not included on the label. Updating mifepristone’s label would make the medication accessible for miscarriage management without fear of criminal action against health care providers, as well as ensure women can access the most safe and effective treatment for miscarriage.”

Shaheen said the letter was in response to FDA’s denial last month of a 2022 citizen petition from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and 48 other reproductive health organizations that asked the agency to urge Danco Laboratories to submit an application to add the miscarriage management indication. In its [denial](https://downloads.regulations.gov/FDA-2022-P-2425-0003/attachment%5F1.pdf?ref=fdaweb.com), FDA said only that it would review an sNDA if Danco submitted it.
