**Astellas Pharma** has agreed to acquire **Ganymed Pharmaceuticals** AG for $1.4 billion. The transaction will give Astellas rights to IMAB362, which recently was shown to significantly extend median survival when added to standard chemotherapy for patients with advanced gastric cancer.

Startup **Unity Biotechnology** has raised $116 million in a Series B round that will be used to target diseases related to aging. The company is focusing its early work specifically on halting the progression of atherosclerotic disease. The funding is expected to move preclinical programs into clinical research.

**Spinal Elements** has teamed up with **Mighty Oak Medical** to market the Firefly surgical guidance system. The device comprises bone models and guides precisely matched to a patient’s anatomy through concierge pre-surgical planning and proprietary computer-designed guidance solutions. Using data from a patient’s computed topography scan, Mighty Oak is able to make highly accurate patient-specific pedicle screw guides to be used intraoperatively.

**Smith & Nephew** has opened a new manufacturing facility for sports medicine orthopedic devices in Coyol Free Zone, Alajuela, Costa Rica. The $55 million facility will add up to 250 new job positions to the 1,700 existing ones in Costa Rica.
