Software Apps for Contraception Placed into Class 2

Federal Register notice: FDA has classified software applications for contraception into Class 2 (special controls). The action is based on a 2017 Natural Cycles Nordic AB de novo classification request for the company’s Natural Cycles. Such products are identified as a device that provides user-specific fertility information for preventing a pregnancy. It includes an algorithm that performs analysis of patient-specific data (e.g., temperature, menstrual cycle dates) to distinguish between fertile and non-fertile days, then provides patient-specific recommendations related to contraception.
