Spectranetics PMA for Drug-Coated Angioplasty Balloon

Spectranetics Corp. has submitted a PMA for the Stellarex drug-coated angioplasty balloon, for use in restoring and maintaining blood flow to the superficial femoral and popliteal arteries in patients with peripheral arterial disease. The device, which was first launched in Europe 1/2015, uses EnduraCoat technology, a durable, uniform coating designed to prevent drug loss during transit and facilitate controlled, efficient drug delivery to the treatment site, the company says.

The submission is based on data from the company’s ILLUMENATE clinical trial program that enrolled over 1,100 patients. The ILLUMENATE EU randomized trial saw the primary safety and effectiveness endpoints being met and superiority over percutaneous transluminal angioplasty, Spectranetics says.
