# Sunshine Needed on Doc Drug Company Payments: Grassley

Sen. **Charles Grassley** (R-IA) says that a recent [study](http://ajph.aphapublications.org/doi/10.2105/AJPH.2017.303982?ref=fdaweb.com) published in the *American Journal of Public Health* that found that between 2013 and 2015, 68,177 doctors received more than $46 million in payments from drug companies promoting opioids “is exactly the kind of research the sunshine disclosures should promote.” He is a co-sponsor of the Physician Payments Sunshine Act and of a pending bill to extend disclosure requirements to nurse practitioners and physician assistants.

“Payments don’t mean doctors are doing something wrong,” Grassley says. “Disclosure allows for the analysis of trends, like the fact that opioid makers were reaching a lot of doctors as the opioid crisis was getting worse. This is information the public should know.”
