Supplement Reform Appears Dead for 2022: Report

Sen. Richard Burr (R-NC), ranking member of the Senate HELP Committee, says there is no chance of action on legislation to reform FDA oversight of dietary supplements during the lame-duck session of Congress now underway. Axios reports that despite Burr’s definitive statement, a GOP committee aide said it is still possible that supplement reform legislation could be considered before Congress adjourns.

Some consumer groups have been lobbying for mandatory product labeling to be incorporated in an end-of-the-year omnibus bill, the report says. FDA has proposed that manufacturers be required to submit their dietary supplement product labels to the agency.

The Axios report includes many pro and con views on the proposal for mandatory product labeling.
