Texas House Approves Drug Import Bill

The Texas House has approved legislation to create a program that would allow certain drugs to be imported from Canada. The bill must still be debated and voted on by the state Senate.

CBS News reports the legislation would require the state to work with Canadian suppliers to select drugs that would save Texans money. The bill summary did not include an estimate of potential savings, the report says.

CBS says that at a hearing on the bill, the Texas Pharmacy Association opposed it, citing safety concerns. The bill would require each drug imported from Canada to meet FDA standards and FDA would have to approve the state program, it says. Several states are awaiting agency approval for such programs.
