Tirzepatide Shortage ‘Resolved,’ FDA Says

FDA says the shortage of tirzepatide injection (Lilly’s Mounjaro and Zepbound), a glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) medication that became in short supply in 2022 due to increased demand, has been resolved. An agency notice says it confirmed with Lilly that its stated product availability and manufacturing capacity can meet the present and projected national demand.

“Patients and prescribers may still see intermittent localized supply disruptions as the products move through the supply chain from the manufacturer and distributors to local pharmacies,” the notice says.

In the notice, the agency reminds compounders of the legal restrictions on making copies of FDA-approved drugs, and also says that while the tirzepatide shortage has been resolved, shortages of three other GLP-1 products (dulaglutide [Lilly’s Trulicity], semaglutide [Novo Nordisk’s Ozempic], and liraglutide [Victoza and Saxenda]) injections continue.
