Trump Plan Wants Pricing Disclosed in DTC Ads
President Trump’s just-released blueprint for lowering prescription drug prices orders FDA to require drug companies advertising their drugs to include pricing information in the advertisements. HHS secretary Alex Azar, who joined the president in a 5/11 Rose Garden announcement, had this to say: “Think about all the time everybody spends watching drug company ads, and how much information companies are required to put in them. If we want to have a real market for drugs, why not have them disclose their prices in the ads, too? Consumers would have much more balanced information, and companies would have a very different set of incentives for setting their prices. We’re immediately going to look into having the FDA require this.”
The blueprint includes 50 actions the Trump Administration is willing to take to lower drug costs to consumers. These include:
- Taking steps to end the gaming of regulatory and patent processes by drug makers to unfairly protect monopolies.
- Advancing biosimilars and generics to boost price competition.
- Streamlining and accelerating the approval process for over-the-counter drugs.
- Speeding access to, and lower the cost of, new drugs by clarifying policies for sharing information between insurers and drug makers.
