# U.S. Drug Shortages Increasing: Report

A new Iqvia Institute report says drug shortages continue to increase in the U.S., with more shortages being reported than resolved. As of June, the [report](https://app.constellation.iqvia.com/e/es?s=460529241&e=1919626&elqTrackId=ef8a043273e14fb588e0ba8f360cdc7c&elq=7f8da1c4c11b4cd8b4c5f9d004c1b399&elqaid=20826&elqat=1&ref=fdaweb.com) says, there were 132 active shortages, with 75% of them having been active for more than one year and 58% ongoing for more than two years.

Over the past 5.5 years, according to Iqvia, an average of more than 25 new molecule shortages have occurred annually, with 160 in total through 6/2023, and only 51 resolved.

The analysis found that shortages are more common in drugs with very low list prices. Drugs priced at less than $1 per extended unit accounted for 56% of the 125 drugs in shortage with reported volume in the Iqvia analysis.

As of June, the report says, there were eight cancer medicines with active shortages, while five others had shortages over the last five years that were resolved.

Oncology has seen a growing number of shortages since 2020, Iqvia says, with four new molecule shortages between March and June.

“Stakeholders have recommended various approaches to mitigate shortages, such as prioritizing essential medicines, stockpiling, and making changes to reimbursement or statutory rebates,” according to the report. “Shortages appear to be driven by a variety of causes that need to be better understood, as they may impact which solutions will best address them.”
