Use of Expedited Drug Review Programs Increasing

FDA researchers say the use of expedited drug development and review programs increased from 2008 to 2021 and is likely to continue increasing. Writing in a JAMA Network open-access article, the researchers say they wanted to learn how often the accelerated approval, breakthrough therapy, fast track, and priority review programs are used alone and in combination.

“The findings suggest that expedited programs have an increasing role in bringing novel drugs to market in the U.S., especially orphan and biologic products,” they write.
