# Vaccine Panel Unanimously Supports Moderna Booster

FDA’s Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee 10/14 voted unanimously to support Moderna’s request for an emergency use authorization (EUA) for a booster dose of its mRNA Covid-19 vaccine. Panel members agreed that the booster dose was appropriate for older and higher-risk adults who were vaccinated at least six months ago.

An agency [briefing document](https://www.fda.gov/media/152991/download?ref=fdaweb.com) released in advance of the meeting noted that the EUA request contained effectiveness and safety data on the proposed booster shot from 171 adults age 18 and older in an ongoing Phase 2 study who received a booster shot six months after completing a two-dose primary series. Panel members acknowledged that the two-dose vaccine currently provides significant protection against severe Covid-19 infections and death, but they agreed with FDA reviewers and company officials that a third, reduced dose of the vaccine would boost protection against growing breakthrough infections.
