Vertex Signal Inhibitor VX-993 Misses Trial Goal

Vertex Pharmaceuticals says its investigational selective NaV1.8 pain signal inhibitor VX-993 did not meet the primary endpoint in a Phase 2 study evaluating its safety and effectiveness in treating acute pain after bunionectomy surgery. As a result, a company statement says, VX-993 will not be moved into pivotal development as monotherapy in acute pain.

Company officials indicated that VX-993 was not expected to be superior to Vertex’ existing NaV1.8 inhibitors, based on the trial results.

The statement says that VX-993 was generally safe and well-tolerated at all doses studied in the Phase 2 trial, with the overall incidence of adverse events similar to placebo.
