# Ways to Improve FAERS Signal Review

Yale University researchers say their review of drug safety signals identified from the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) between 2008 and 2019 suggested ways FDA could ensure timely and robust assessment of potential safety signals. [Writing](https://www.bmj.com/content/379/bmj.o2409?ref=fdaweb.com) in *the BMJ*, the researchers offer three considerations:

- set deadlines for reviewing safety signals;
- robust and larger scale postmarket studies are needed to evaluate drug safety, as many regulatory safety actions may only be based on adverse events submitted to FAERS or other case studies; and
- transparency is important regarding safety signal evaluations and the evidence used to support regulatory actions to resolve safety signals, including what data were used to make the decision.
