# Whitmer Wants Mifepristone REMS Lifted

Michigan Gov. **Gretchen Whitmer** (D) is asking FDA commissioner **Robert Califf** to “remove the mifepristone Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS) restrictions in order to eliminate yet another burdensome requirement that threatens timely and essential reproductive health care.” In a 7/21 [letter](https://www.scribd.com/document/583535949/220721-FDA-Letter-With-Signature?ref=fdaweb.com#download&from%5Fembed), Whitmer says the REMS restrictions “are preventing many \[women\] from accessing abortion care.”

According to the governor, many leading medical organizations have determined that mifepristone is safe and effective and have opposed the REMS requirements because they place unnecessary requirements on patients who want to access safe and effective medication.

In her letter, Whitmer praises the Biden administration for increasing access to mifepristone through FDA’s removal of an in-person dispensing requirement during Covid-19 and removing the in-person requirement from the REMS. “It is critical that you further exercise FDA’s authority and remove the REMS restrictions altogether,” Whitmer concludes.
