Workshop to Tackle Nitrosamine Impurities in Drugs

FDA has announced a 3/29-30 public workshop on “Nitrosamines as Impurities in Drugs; Health Risk Assessment and Mitigation.” The agency says the workshop will include presentations on nitrosamines chemistry and toxicology, and on the findings of nitrosamines as impurities in drugs. It will also include an open discussion on questions prepared by FDA. Topics to be addressed: nitrosamines as chemicals present in the environment, in food and, more recently, detected as impurities in drugs; nitrosamine pharmacokinetics, carcinogenesis, mutagenesis; and health risk assessments and mitigation. Additionally, panelists will be asked to identify data gaps and research needs to address uncertainties in nitrosamine safety assessments and how to prevent or minimize their presence in drugs.
