# Zika No Longer ‘Relevant Disease’: FDA

FDA says it has determined that the Zika virus is no longer a relevant communicable disease agent or disease (RCDAD) that requires screening for human cell, tissue, and cellular and tissue-based products (HCT/Ps). An agency [notice](https://www.fda.gov/vaccines-blood-biologics/tissue-tissue-products/information-human-cell-tissue-and-cellular-and-tissue-based-product-hctp-establishments-regarding?ref=fdaweb.com) says that in 2016 FDA determined that the Zika virus was an RCDAD based on the risk of transmission by HCT/Ps, severity of effect, the availability of appropriate screening measures, and the available evidence that demonstrated that the virus had significant incidence and prevalence to affect the potential HCT/P donor population.

FDA says it has now determined that the virus no longer has sufficient incidence and/or prevalence to affect the potential HCT/P donor population. Consequently, it is now withdrawing a 5/2018 guidance that covered donor screening recommendations for Zika.
