FDA says that a 4/17 Zimmer Biomet recall of 33 implantable spinal fusion stimulators is Class 1\. The devices were recalled due to the potential of harmful chemicals that may be toxic to tissues and organs, according to an agency recall [notice](https://www.fda.gov/MedicalDevices/Safety/ListofRecalls/ucm561004.htm?source=govdelivery&utm%5Fmedium=email&utm%5Fsource=govdelivery). The stimulator is used during spinal fusion surgery to increase the possibility of permanently connecting two or more bones of the spine together. It is implanted into a patient’s back and provides constant electrical stimulation to the surgical site.

The company says that routine monitoring found higher than allowed levels of potentially harmful chemicals. It says the use of affected product may cause serious adverse health consequences, including but not limited to chronic infections, long-term hospitalization due to additional surgical procedures, paralysis, and death.
